Plainfield East starts off the new 2023 school year busy with multiple ways for students to become involved in after school activities. This year there has been a number of new installments when it comes to clubs.

With the changing of years also comes the adaptation of new clubs to relate with the times. A new club being introduced this year is the Women Empowerment and Gender Equity club.

Club W.E strives to be a safe space for all genders. Founder of club W.E Junior Aadya Karna said, “I wanted to create a safe space specifically for talking about these issues, for example abortion, abusive relationships, and really talk about it as a way to fix and prevent these problems.”

Another founder of club W.E Junior Madison Cyranek expresses her thoughts on the importance of club W.E, “I just thought it is a really important issue that has gone unnoticed, like we have GSA but we don’t have many members when I was looking at it in the yearbook. And sadly enough I feel like there is a stigma around GSA.”

Club W.E strives for creating a close knit faction between all of their members in order to establish a sense of community. Prioritizing the time to speak upon issues that regularly go unnoticed and brushed under the rug.

Club W.E sponsor Erin McGinnis shares her story on why she chose to sponsor this club, “I was approached by one of my golfers and students Madison Cyranek; she is a member of the girl scouts, and she is tasked with leading some type of club or activity. She asked to take on Female leadership 2.0 [reference to an earlier version of club] and she reached out to me and knows I am very passionate about equality and equity.  I bring up current events in class so she thought I would be a good resource to have as a sponsor for this club.” A newly refurbished club has been created in order to include  more people and reach a wider audience. Club W.E meets in room 120 from 2:30-3:00 pm and welcomes all.
