REVIEW: Profane show entices viewers with atypical vampire story
Do you ever wonder what lurks? When you lie awake…staring off into the dark. Never believing in the characters you read in storybooks were real. Or perhaps you had an innate feeling we were never alone in the darkness.
You would not guess that vampires, witches, and babadooks coexist with us. Only emerging from the shadows when you least expect it.
Based on the film created by Taika Waititi, What We Do in the Shadows is a tv series available on Hulu and FX that follows the lives of four vampires as they navigate modern day Staten Island. A mockumentary with a mix of raunchy jokes and potty humor, What We Do in the Shadows is more suited for mature audiences.
With a new conflict emerging each episode, What We Do in the Shadows helps keep audiences immersed in the idiotic actions of the vampires, making the episodes so stupidly entertaining you cannot help but laugh. Including cameos from Taika Waititi himself and other well known actors such as Nick Kroll and Kristen Schaal, What We Do in the Shadows helps keep the audience guessing as to what comes next.
The show, originally aired in the spring of 2019, is perfectly fit for any season. Although there is no real prospect or ongoing plot for this show, it still keeps many charmingly amused.
Its mockumentary style filming aids in helping you fall in love with each character and understand their qualms. A total audience rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 98%, audiences will agree with the outstanding quality of the show.
What We Do in the Shadows consists of short twenty to thirty minute episodes and only has four seasons so far. Each of those four seasons contain ten episodes where you can view each character growing in their own separate ways, with Gulliermo arguably being one of the most changed characters throughout the course of the show.
Watching as he struggles with inclusivity in vampire society, and his conflicting thoughts on being a familiar while also juggling the responsibilities of being said familiar. Gulliermo is the most in depth and realistic character throughout the entirety of the show. Although having childish desires such as wanting to be a vampire, Guillermo represents all of those who wish for more in this life.
What We Do in the Shadows is a light-hearted, modern, and comically ingenious take on the life of a vampire seen through the eyes of the audience.
