Prior to my senior year, I had merely a vague interest in journalism. However, becoming a staff writer for East Side News earlier this year completely solidified my decision to pursue journalism as a career path. East Side News introduced me to so many amazing people, including Mrs. Munsie, who did a great deal inspiring me to keep writing, and Ms. Galvan, who I will miss playing Wordle and Connections and the Mini and every other game New York Times has to offer with.
I was lucky that writing for East Side News brought me many great opportunities, such as competing in State for Editorial Writing. Just getting to write alongside my peers — who quickly became friends — was an amazing experience in itself.
Outside of journalism, I am fortunate to say I’ve never had a negative experience with a teacher here at East. All of my English teachers furthered my love for writing, reading, and everything in between. I probably wouldn’t have continued writing if it weren’t for a couple of my favorite teachers here.
I am committed to Pennsylvania State University—University Park for Journalism and Political Science, where I hope to continue writing for a school paper! I’ve always had an affinity for writing, but of course, it often gets too confessional. What I like about journalism is that you’re looking externally, viewing things from a neutral scope. When done right, it’s the most empathetic job in the world.
I am sad to say goodbye to East and all the wonderful people in it, but I am thankful for how it prepared me for my next phase of life!
