The Plainfield East boys track team started their transition to outdoor season at the beginning of April and has already made great progress since the end of the indoor season.
A majority of things have helped the team become better.
“The endurance training we do has really helped me get faster overall, and also, as a team, we’ve come together a lot closer with the overnight meet in Bellville,” said junior Josh Winterroth, hurdler, jumper, and varsity captain.
As the season has progressed many team members have exceeded their PR’s (personal records) by a big margin. With longer meets, such as the meet at Bellville, where the team stayed overnight, the team has had more time to bond and grow closer.
With increasing newcomers on the team progress will always be made throughout the season.
“I would say the entire throws group. They are a young group and they continue to set PRs every meet and have continued to improve throughout the season,” said Michael Adamson, head and sprints coach.
Led by a new coach, the throws team began this season with many questions as it was the youngest group of the four. As the seasons progressed, they have seen plenty of growth; in the last meet, all throwers set huge PRs.
Track is a long season, and there are many things that are important to continue improving. The most prevalent being commitment.
“The thing about track is it really is all about commitment,” said Winterroth. “You need to stick with it. If you don’t stick with it, then your whole progress is just gonna go away, and I feel like a lot of our guys are very committed, especially this year compared to others.”
With a much younger team than in years past, commitment is a significant part of becoming better year-round. This year’s team has shown it by coming to practice on time, staying focused, and working hard.
Throughout history, the team has tended to perform their best towards the end of the year.
“I would say it’s a product of all the workouts we do, especially at the start of the season,” said senior Josh Ebarvia, sprinter and track team captain. “They are very important because that will push us and keep the momentum throughout the rest of the season and we start to PR heavy and are extra competitive during the end of the year.”
The team is seeing their hard work and competitiveness pay off. During the outdoor season, there have been significant PRs from all four groups compared to how they performed during the end of the indoor season.
The team looks forward to finishing the season off strong and hopes to qualify for state.
