Since the dawn of the 21st century, Nickelodeon has been the go-to channel for kids and teens. Taking viewers by storm with shows like “iCarly,” “Zoey101,” “Drake & Josh,” etc, the company was a top dog.
“Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,” a five-episode documentary, dives deep into what truly went on in these shows before viewers’ eyes and the even worse conditions behind the camera.
The man behind all these successes is Dan Schneider. In the documentary, viewers hear from multiple childhood actors, writers, and producers who worked alongside Schneider. They recount terrible experiences that made them feel belittled, uncomfortable, and scarred to this day.
The documentary eventually discussed Schneider’s responsibility for childhood actor Amanda Bynes’s success. I love this part because it highlights how Dan now had full control and would pay later. Multiple actors and Dan’s coworkers reported that the two had a strange close relationship. Schneider even tried to help get the young Bynes emancipated from her parents, which many other young actors and actresses were doing at the time.
Throughout the documentary, things got dark with the shared experiences and stories of all the victims during these tough times for the company, but it is very informative for the next generation and even the previous.
One of the darkest moments in the documentary comes when the untold story of Drake Bell, co-star on the hit show “Drake & Josh,” is finally revealed. In 2003, Brian Peck, who was a dialogue coach for “The Amanda Show,” was arrested for lewd conduct with a minor and charged with 11 counts.
Years later, Bell would come to tell his story that he was the victim of these selfish, horrid crimes. The things he endured were despicable, and his willingness to tell his story is extremely empowering and informative.
“Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV” is a shocking story and an eye-catcher. It is a must-watch for anybody who grew up watching Nickelodeon as a kid.
