Part-time jobs during the summer are becoming increasingly common. With the rise of students looking for a way to gain both money and work experience, some students may encounter difficulty getting their desired job, even if it is just for the few month’s break students have.
Depending on the student’s year, jobs might be easier or more difficult to get. Due to the major focus on college, seniors would need to find jobs that are easily accessible and that have flexible work hours. While some seniors plan on staying in the area, others might be traveling, increasing the job pressure.
“It might be harder for me since I am going to college, so that is something I am a bit concerned about since I won’t be working there for long,” said senior Emanuella Okine, Medical Club attendee.
On the flip side, students in their younger years, such as freshmen and sophomores, are looking for jobs, but some are caught up in joining more clubs and activities for college. Many students have summer activities that could interfere with their goal of getting a part-time job.
“I feel like having summer school while having a job is going to make it harder to juggle because having a job and having summer school at the same time – you’ll have to focus on summer school and your job. It also shifts your hours because you can’t work the first half of the day because you’ll be in summer school,” said sophomore Joshua Dicosimo, band member.
Summer jobs are going to be most available to students who do not have busy schedules or things to work around in summer. However, these activities help students gain experiences with leadership and cooperation.
“I am a student leader in multiple clubs, all of which have given me great experience working with others and improving my leadership,” Okine said.
Familial involvement also helps with experience.
“Halfway around the beginning of 2020 until around 2022, my family had a side hustle where we bought stuff in stores and sold them online on Amazon. I’ll definitely put that on my resume,” Dicisimo said.
Students in different years all have their own struggles to find jobs, but in the end, it all depends on the type of student and what they’re looking for. There is no one-size-fits-all with jobs, so the best thing to do is look for one that caters to you.
