Plainfield East presented its annual school play on Thursday, Nov. 14, showcasing the talents of many students in this year’s production of “You Can’t Take It With You.”
The play follows two families with opposite dynamics coming together through the marriage of Alice Sycamore, a young lady from a crazy family and Tony, a young man from a proper family who also happens to be her boss’s son.
“You Can’t Take It With You” shows how even though bringing together very different groups of people can have challenges, there still has to be acceptance with one another and this idea couldn’t have shown through without the help of senior actresses, Ina Raz and Abby Hebreard.
Hebreard played the character Essie, sister of Alice who loved to dance despite not being the best at it.
“I loved how energetic she was and how she was kinda crazy with a sweet side because that’s kind of how I am. And I really liked how she is just unapologetically herself with being a dancer, not the greatest, but still loving to dance,” said Hebreard.
One thing that really made Essie shine was how much Hebreard enjoyed playing her.
“The part that I was looking forward to doing the most was any part that was dancing,” said Hebreard.
Along with Hebreard’s love for Essie is Raz’s love for Raeba, the Sycamore’s maid.
“I liked that she was just always there for the family no matter what the family was going through or if there was just chaos which there always was. Raeba was just always there to care for everyone and to just be a rock for them and that’s something that I really admired about her,” said Raz.
As for her favorite scene,
“Where they play ‘forget me not’ because it’s really funny, and it was the height of the excitement because it showed a lot about Tony’s family and Alice’s family since they were able to have dinner together,” said Raz.
Not only do the families come together during the play, but the cast as well. Something both Raz and Hebreard loved about the play was the bonding time they got out of it with their fellow cast members.
“It was my last play and even though that’s sad it felt very accomplished and it has been so much fun doing this the past three years with all my friends and having such a great time all together,” said Raz.
