I have been a part of East Side News for four years now, I grew alongside this wonderful publication and saw many come and go. Throughout my time with ESN I flourished, I was able to grow not just as a writer but as a person as well. With journalism I was able to connect with my community after being disconnected from the world because of COVID. Being able to connect with my peers, staff members, and various communities that make up Plainfield East has provided me with lessons I will carry with me throughout all my life.
My love for journalism was able to thrive under the wonderful guidance of Ms. Galvan who always encouraged me to shoot for the stars. Her encouragement and support pushed me to apply to the Princeton Summer Journalism Program (PSJP) which will forever be my greatest achievement (if I don’t end up on Univision and become the next Jorge Ramos).
PSJP taught me multiple lessons I will carry with me for life. I learned how to talk to strangers which pushed me out of my comfort zone since I was so used to talking to only students and staff members. It helped solidify my desire to forever contribute my life to journalism. I plan on writing until my fingers give out and fall off, even then I will have text to speech as my saving grace.
Journalism helped that quiet girl who did not know anyone freshman year to blossom into someone who can take a cheap microphone from Temu and do person off the street interviews on Princeton University’s campus.
With every new advisor I gained a new skill set. Mrs. Hornik gave me a crash course on Cronkite and helped me navigate the stressful world of InDesign. Mrs. Munsie pushed me to write stories outside of my niche. Ms. Galvan inspired me to write what I truly wanted to be published and never discouraged any of my ideas or pitches. She allowed my mind to flourish and encouraged me to continue with any crazy idea I had.
I want anyone who can to join our publication if they need help finding their voice or if they want to help in allowing other’s voices to be heard. Being a part of East Side News was the best decision I had ever made and I would do it all over again in any lifetime.
